How do the Longmen Grottoes in China turn carved stone into a dialogue between civilizations? At the 2026 Global Mayors’ Dialogue in Luoyang, central China’s Henan Province, the answer is written in stone.

Beginning in 493 and continuing for more than 400 years, the carving of the Longmen Grottoes created a 1.3-kilometer-long complex featuring nearly 110,000 statues, 2,345 niches and 78 pagodas. Together, they form a UNESCO World Heritage Site regarded as a pinnacle of Chinese stone-carving art. Some 1,500 years later, Longmen still speaks to the world. Through digital monitoring, scientific restoration, water management and international outreach, the site has developed a comprehensive approach to preserving cultural and historical heritage.

World heritage belongs to all humanity. Protecting it requires not only new technologies and sustainable approaches to conservation and tourism, but also the shared responsibility of every visitor. CGTN reporter Zang Shijie spoke with mayors from Cambodia, Argentina and Italy at the site to explore how new technologies are helping preserve this cultural treasure for future generations. http://t.cn/AXlMlCnD
