Over the years, I’ve watched many young people just like you.
Freshman year grinding for GPA, sophomore year stacking up competitions, junior year hunting for internships, senior year polishing résumés, and in grad school, getting that first paper ready long before it’s due.
Every step precise, impressive, flawless.
You are smart, ambitious, and battle-ready.
But what truly worries me is not that you aren’t excellent enough — it’s that you learned to be excellent too early.
Too early, you learned to win within the rules; too early, you learned to use certainty to fight off anxiety; too early, you learned to train yourselves into high-efficiency, low-friction, highly adaptable competitors.
这当然会带来成功,但它也可能让一个人越来越会证明自己,却越来越少认识自己;
This will certainly bring success — but it may also make you increasingly good at proving yourselves, yet increasingly poor at knowing yourselves;
越来越会回应世界的要求,却越来越不清楚自己内心真正的方向;
increasingly skilled at meeting the world’s demands, yet increasingly unclear about your own true direction;
increasingly like a “well-finished product,” yet less and less like a “person still growing.”
The truly important questions in life, as it happens, often have no standard answers.
What is worth a lifetime of devotion? What matters more than winning? When should you persist, and when should you let go? What is success, and what merely looks like success?
— Not only do these questions have no uniform answers; even the questions themselves, you have to discover on your own.

If education only rewards the quick, the accurate, and the well-formatted recitation of answers, then it will ultimately produce people who are perfectly suited for yesterday’s world — not people who can create tomorrow’s.
教育不仅要让人有用,更要让人自由;
Education should not only make a person useful — it should make a person free;
不仅要让人胜任工作,更要让人不被工作定义;
not only make a person competent at work — but also make a person not defined by work;
not only help a person enter the world — but also, after entering it, still retain the ability to question it, revise it, and reimagine it.”
