Today, brother is taking me up to swim in the lake like father used to.
今天，哥哥要带我爬上山，去湖里游泳，就像从前父亲常做的那样。

Be careful, brother warns.
“小心点。”哥哥提醒我。

Remember, the hike up is long and steep.
“记住，爬上去的路又长又陡。”

I nod like I’m not afraid.
我点点头，装出一副毫不害怕的样子。

At the peak, the dawn sky swaddles us in heat and the water glistens below.
站在山顶，黎明的天空用暖意将我们包裹，湖水在下方闪闪发亮。

brother takes off his shirt i take off my shirt
哥哥脱掉上衣，我也脱掉上衣。

brother stretches i stretch
哥哥伸展身体，我也跟着伸展身体。

brother walks toward the edge and i stand behind him
哥哥朝着边缘走去，我站在他身后。

i watch him press his arms tight to his head and slip neatly into the lake
我看着他将双臂紧紧贴在头边，利落地跃入湖中。

for an instant brother disappears and the water stills
有那么一瞬间，哥哥消失了，湖面恢复了平静。

then he emerges wet and triumphant
接着，他浑身湿透地浮出水面，神气十足，满脸得意。

it’s nice and cool down here
“这里又舒服又凉快！”

brother calls bobbing up and down suddenly my stomach is full of stones
哥哥一边上下浮沉，一边大声喊道。突然间，我觉得自己的胃里像是塞满了石头。

how did I ever do this before
我以前究竟是怎么做到的？

jump！brother shouts. I inch forward until my toes meet the edge
“跳啊！”哥哥大喊。我一点一点地向前挪动，直到脚趾抵住边缘。

the water looks so far away
湖水看起来那么遥远。

jump brother shouts again
“跳啊！”哥哥再次喊道。

the ground wiggles I close my eyes on the inside of my eyelids I see father
脚下的地面仿佛在晃动。我闭上眼睛，在眼睑内侧的黑暗中，我看见了父亲。

I watch him stretch
我看着他伸展身体。

soar
腾空飞翔。

splash
溅起水花。
