一只披着野狐皮毛的怪兽混入到狐群中。它们日夜作伴，以朋友互称，相处良好。
There once was a lone monster draped in fox fur. The monster found a family of foxes, joined them, and they became friends. The monster lived with the family, day and night, and everyone treated it as one of their own.
野狐の皮を被った猛獣が、狐の群れに紛れていた。彼らは昼夜を共にし、互いを友と呼び合い、仲睦まじくしていた。
여우 가죽을 쓴 괴물이 여우 무리에 숨어들었다. 그들은 늘 함께 지냈고 서로를 친구라 부르며 좋은 관계를 유지했다

偶尔，怪兽也会在夜里脱下狐狸皮，对着水中的自己哀叹：我这样怪异，它们却笨得看不透真相，实在可惜。
Once in a while, the monster would take off its fox fur at night, and lament to itself as it gazed at its reflection in the water: "I am a monstrosity, yet they are too foolish to see it... I pity them."
偶に、猛獣は夜になると狐の皮を脱ぎ、水中の自分に向かって嘆く。自分はこれほど不自然な存在なのに、彼らは愚かでそれを見抜けない。実に残念だ、と。
가끔 밤에 괴물은 가죽을 벗고 물속에 비친 자신의 모습을 보며 탄식했다: 「난 이상하게 생겼는데 저들은 멍청해서 눈치 못 챘지, 참 안타까운걸」

不过很快怪兽便释怀了，因为狐群中的异类不只有它，还有一只白色树木雕刻出来，遭人遗弃的小猫。
But the monster soon found solace when another came to live among the foxes who was not their kin: a kitten, carved from the wood of a white tree, who had been abandoned by the humans.
しかし猛獣はすぐにその考えをやめた。なぜなら狐の群れにいる異類は彼だけではなかったのだ。もう一匹、白い樹から彫り出され、人に見捨てられた子猫がいた。
하지만 곧 괴물은 걱정을 내려놓을 수 있었다. 무리에 다른 존재가 하나 더 생겼기 때문이었다. 그것은 흰색 나무로 조각되고 유기당한 작은 고양이였다

小猫也想变成狐狸，但它尾巴太细小，又长不出富有色彩的皮毛。其他狐狸见了，安慰道：就算如此，你也是我们的同伴。
The kitten, too, wished to become a fox, but its tail was too slender and it could not grow a coat of richly colored fur. Yet when the other foxes saw this, they spoke words of comfort to the kitten: "Even without a tail and fur like ours, you are still one of us."
子猫は狐になりたかった。だけど子猫の尻尾は細くて短く、色鮮やかな毛並みを生やすこともできない。他の狐はそれを見ると、こう慰めた——だとしても、君は僕たちの仲間だ。
고양이는 여우가 되고 싶었지만 그의 꼬리는 여우보다 길었고 귀는 너무 짧았다. 다른 여우들은 슬퍼하는 고양이를 위로해 주었다: 「우리는 그래도 널 동료로 생각해」

怪兽厌恶这种美满，在山中点起一把火。动物们异常惊慌。为了扑灭大火，它们必须做出牺牲。
Furious at this happy resolution. the monster lit a fire on the mountain. The terrified animals panicked as the fire spread. The only way to extinguish the flames was to make a sacrifice.
猛獣はそんな馴れ合いを嫌い、山の中で火をつけた。動物たちはひどく怯えた。大きな火を消すには、犠牲を払う必要があるからだ。
이런 아름다운 감정을 혐오한 괴물은 모든 걸 망쳐버리기 위해 산에 불을 질렀다. 불을 끄려면 누군가가 반드시 희생해야만 했다

一只灰色的狐狸站起来，与怪兽交谈。它说：你是如此聪明，一定能想到帮助我们的办法。
A gray fox stood up and addressed the monster. It said: "You are the cleverest among us. Surely you can help us find a way to solve this."
一匹の灰色の狐が前に出て、猛獣と話をした。曰く——君は頭がいいから、きっと僕たちを救う方法を思いつくはずだ。
이때 한 회색 여우가 나서서 괴물과 대화를 나누었다: 「넌 똑똑하니까 우리를 도울 방법을 생각해 낼 수 있을 거야」

怪兽笑着将灰狐狸带到火边，杀死了它。灰狐狸的心被制成一颗剔透美丽、纤尘不染的水珠。
The monster smiled, led the fox toward the fire... and murdered it. The gray fox's heart was turned into a beautiful drop of water, clear, spotless, and pure.
猛獣は微笑みながら灰色の狐を火のそばに連れ、殺した。灰色の狐の心は、透明で美しい無垢な雫に作り上げられた。
