If I wanted to watch a music video, I’d just watch Michael himself. A film should have a central idea. It should have a story. Please stop confusing a montage with a narrative.

The genuinely childlike, almost painfully fragile empathy he had for the world, wrapped inside a fiercely original, boundary-pushing artistic mind, is almost completely absent. You can’t just keep flashing Peter Pan on screen as shorthand for “he read this book.”

Michael wasn’t simply sweet. He was lost. He was angry. He was paranoid. He could feel all of those things at once. He was deeply contradictory, and that’s exactly what made him human. Those emotions lived in every performance he gave. Calling it merely “music” doesn’t even begin to capture what he was doing.

Instead, the film reduces him to a flat cardboard cutout, sanitized celebrity archetype, almost a male version of Britney Spears. It’s ridiculous.

What the film misses entirely is his capacity for love, for trust, and for exposing his own heart. Neither Michael the person nor MJ the extraordinary artist ever truly walks onto the screen.

It’s a shame.
