The Bowl of Fish Soup Noodles

I was twelve that year, boarding at the middle school in town.

A sudden high fever prompted my homeroom teacher to send word home. The next day at noon, my father appeared at the school gate, wearing his faded blue cotton jacket, clutching a plastic bag in his hand. He fished a crumpled one-yuan note from his pocket—that was for the bus fare. From our village to town, there were only two buses a day.

The town clinic was small. The doctor prescribed medicine and wrapped it in several small paper packets. As my father took the medicine, I watched his hand—cracked and calloused—count out the bills one by one from the plastic bag. When he finished, only a few thin cent coins remained at the bottom, lying flat against his palm.

We stepped out of the clinic. The sun was directly overhead. Father asked if I was hungry. I said no. Truly, I wasn't—I had seen those few coins.

But he still pulled me into a noodle shop by the street and said to the owner behind the counter: "One bowl of fish soup noodles."

The owner, a plump middle-aged man, acknowledged and turned into the kitchen. Father added: "I've already eaten. Just for the kid."

The noodles arrived—a large bowl, the broth white as milk, with a few segments of green garlic floating on top, steam rising. I reached for an empty bowl, wanting to split the noodles in half.

"Eat quickly, before it gets cold." Father's voice suddenly turned stern. Then he stood up, walked outside, leaned against the wall, took out his cigarette case from his pocket, and lit one.

I finished that bowl of noodles with tears streaming down my face. The broth was delicious, the noodles chewy, but every mouthful I swallowed got stuck in my throat. After I finished, Father said: "You go back to school by yourself. I need to buy some other things." His tone had returned to normal, as if that bowl of noodles, those few coins, that cigarette—none of it was worth mentioning.

I nodded and turned to leave. After walking a long way, I looked back. He was still standing at the noodle shop entrance, his cigarette already out, talking to the owner. The owner waved his hand, as if declining something.

Many years later, after I got married, I was accompanying my wife to her parents' home and passed by that noodle shop in town. We went in for a bowl. While chatting with the owner, I brought up that day. He thought for a long moment, then suddenly slapped his forehead: "You're that kid—your father came running out after you left, said he was short twenty cents and would bring it on his next market day. I told him forget it, but he wouldn't have it. He insisted on handing me that pack of cigarettes."

The owner laughed as he spoke: "That pack was still sealed, you know."

I did the math. From town to our village—eighteen li. That one-yuan bus fare had already been spent on the trip here.

That bowl of fish soup noodles—fifty cents. He owed the owner twenty cents and left his cigarettes at the counter instead.

And the eighteen li back home—he walked every single step on foot.

I never ate fish soup noodles again after that. Not because I didn't want to—but because the taste of that one bowl was too heavy, too heavy to swallow even a single mouthful.

Yancheng fish soup noodles are famous—white broth, fine noodles, fragrant with garlic. But I know that the best bowl in this world was already finished by me that winter. What remains is nothing but the echo of those eighteen li.

May all fathers in this world enjoy good health and all that their hearts desire.
