而对于不服从的人，我们认为他犯了三重罪：第一，我们是生育他的父母，他却不服从我们；第二，我们是养育他的恩人，他却不服从我们；第三，他既已与我们达成约定要服从我们，却既不服从，也不劝谏我们——如果我们行事不当的话。尽管我们给予他这样的机会，并非粗暴地命令他必须执行我们的命令，而是允许他在二者中进行选择——要么劝谏我们，要么遵行我们的命令。然而，这两者他都没有做到。

And we say that he who does not obey does threefold wrong, because he disobeys us who are his parents, because he disobeys us who nurtured him, and because after agreeing to obey us he neither obeys us nor convinces us that we are wrong, though we give him the opportunity and do not roughly order him to do what we command, but when we allow him a choice of two things, either to convince us of error or to do our bidding, he does neither of these things.

καὶ τὸν μὴ πειθόμενον τριχῇ φαμεν ἀδικεῖν, ὅτι τε γεννηταῖς οὖσιν ἡμῖν οὐ πείθεται, καὶ ὅτι τροφεῦσι, καὶ ὅτι ὁμολογήσας ἡμῖν πείσεσθαι οὔτε πείθεται οὔτε πείθει ἡμᾶς, εἰ μὴ καλῶς τι ποιοῦμεν, προτιθέντων ἡμῶν καὶ οὐκ ἀγρίως ἐπιταττόντων ποιεῖν ἃ ἂν κελεύωμεν, ἀλλὰ ἐφιέντων δυοῖν θάτερα, ἢ πείθειν ἡμᾶς ἢ ποιεῖν, τούτων οὐδέτερα ποιεῖ.
