I’ve always been curious about the different attitudes toward dominant victories in sport.
In tennis, a 6–0 set is simply a result. No one expects a player to give away a game just to make the score look better.
In table tennis, though, there is often an expectation that a player should avoid winning 11–0 and allow the opponent a point at 10–0.
I understand where that tradition comes from, but I’ve never been completely convinced that giving away a point is more respectful than competing fully.
To me, one of the greatest signs of respect in sport is treating your opponent as a real competitor and playing every point seriously.
