About a decade ago, a sudden tidal wave of public outrage swept through cyberspace, and the Red Cross took a brutal beating in public opinion. During that frenzy, every government-affiliated charity project was tarred with the same brush, and the slogan "don't give a penny" was chanted at full volume.
Now, Han Hong has drawn online flak for urging her friends to "show some face" and support a movie — and the fire quickly spread from the film to her charity foundation. But the criticism didn't stop at Han Hong's foundation; some netizens went on to attack all non-governmental charities outside the Red Cross, with one typical claim being: "Anyone who does charity with other people's money rather than their own is a fraud."
Critics of Han Hong's foundation seem to operate on a fixed set of beliefs: charity should be funded entirely from one's own pocket, and raising money from the public is inherently unethical; those who do charity work must also live like ascetics. In their view, only official institutions are entitled to solicit public donations — anyone from the private sector doing the same must be a con artist. Holding philanthropists to such "saint-like" standards is likely the root cause of many of these recurring clashes.
The Smile Angel Foundation probably went through a similar ordeal of misunderstanding before. Fortunately, it eventually won over the internet and managed to turn its fate around.
All in all, I just feel that doing charity work is truly no easy task. State-backed charities have been brutally bashed to death in the past; now it's the turn of private foundations to bear the brunt. As the saying goes, the wheel of fortune turns — and apparently, so does risk.
