“I was also letting my emotional attachment to patients override my ability to be a good doctor. I thought spending fifteen minutes getting their entire life story made me a better doctor, but one morning I was sitting with a lady who’d fallen at home. She was telling me everything, how she’d scraped her knee when she was seven, how her husband had died, just everything, and while I was sitting there thinking I was doing such a great job there was a guy dying in the waiting room because he wasn’t seen in time.
