“福如东海，寿比南山”是流传千年的传统祝寿吉语，比喻福气像东海般浩瀚绵长，寿命如南山一样悠远长久。其源头可追溯到《诗经·小雅·天保》中“如南山之寿，不骞不崩”的诗句，完整的联同形态最早见于明代柯月邱《荆钗记·庆诞》“齐祝赞，愿福如东海寿比南山”，此后逐渐成为祝寿场合最经典的祝福表述。"May your fortune be as boundless as the East China Sea and your longevity as enduring as the South Mountain" is a traditional birthday blessing that has been passed down for thousands of years. Meaning that wishing you all the best in the years ahead—good fortune and long life! Its origin can be traced back to the line "Like the South Mountain ensuring for eternity without decline or collapse from the Xiaoya· Tianbao of ·《The Book of Songs》. The complete form of the idiom was first seen in《Purple Hairpin (Jing Chai Ji) ·Celebration of Birth》 by Ke Yueqiu in the Ming Dynasty (1368—1644）. "Together we praise and wish that your blessing is as vast the East China Sea and your longevity as enduring as the South Mountain. Since then, it has gradually become the most classic blessing expression for birthday celebrations.

古人以东海喻福，是因为东方是日出之地，象征生机与尊贵，而大海浩瀚包容、奔流不息，却好对应福气深厚绵长的期许；关系“南山”主流说法一是特指陕西西安的终南山（又名太乙山、中南山，简称南山），是道文化“道教祖庭地位”、佛文化、寿文化的发祥圣地，自古就是隐士隐居的胜地，素有“仙都”洞天之冠”和“天下第一福地”的美称），是《诗经》中“南山之寿”的原典所指；另一种说法认为是湖南南岳衡山，衡山对应天上，二十八星宿的轸星，主人间寿算，自古便有“寿岳”之称。民间也有海南三亚鳌山（南山）的传说衍生。

It is known as the "Land of Immortals", "Crown of Grotto-Heaven" and "the First Blessed Land under Heaven".
Another version is that Mt. Heng in Nanyue, Hunan corresponds to the Zhen star among the twenty-eight constellations in the sky. The Mount of Longevity, known as Shouyue, has been revered since ancient times as the mountain governing human lifespan. Folklore legend of Aoshan (Mt. Ao/Mt. South) in Sanya, Hainan also derived.
