Daoism boasts a long and continuous history, shaped by multiple intellectual and cultural streams. Its origins can be traced back to the nature worship and shamanic practices of primitive society.
Numerous deities—representing the sun, moon, mountains, rivers, wind, rain, thunder, and lightning—were assimilated into Daoism and formed the bedrock of its pantheon.
The Immortalists (xianjia) of the Han dynasty championed the ideal of attaining the Way and ascending to immortality, which lies at the very heart of Daoist faith.
Concepts such as “transforming into an immortal” and “ascending to heaven atop a dragon” evolved directly from these teachings.
Toward the late Eastern Han period, many Immortalists formally became Daoist priests.
Meanwhile, key ideas drawn from Laozi’s philosophy—such as tranquility, non-action (wu wei), transcendence of the mundane, and a deep commitment to nurturing life and prolonging longevity—gradually crystallized into Daoism’s theoretical framework.
Laozi was venerated as the religion’s founding patriarch and honored with the divine title Taishang Laojun (Supreme Lord Lao).
Furthermore, Daoism integrated the theories of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements, as well as elements of Confucianism, all of which became embedded within its canonical scriptures.
Thus, Daoism emerged as a grand synthesis of the diverse religious beliefs of the Han dynasty. Deeply rooted in traditional Chinese culture, it found ready acceptance among the people.
