"Growing up on the East Coast of the US, I've eaten a lot of good pizza. But let me show you one of my favorites. It's not in New York City. There is no better pizza around, at least in this country. Everything you look for. It is notably charred, just topped with a little tomato sauce and grated pecorino romano cheese.
But to understand what makes the pizza here so special, we need to understand its history. In the mid-1800s, New Haven's principal immigrant groups were from Amalfi, they were from Benevento, and the Sorrentine Peninsula, which is really the Neapolitan region. And that region is known for its thin-crust pizza. New Haven is a time capsule where these traditions came over, and then they stopped changing.
Peppe's is the oldest pizza place in all of New England that's still consistently making pizza and has been family-run ever since. It doesn't take much to form it. You have to be careful because it's so fragile. My name's Francis Rosselli, I am a grandson and namesake of Frank Pepe. He's from Maiori, Salerno, Italy, on the Amalfi Coast. His philosophy, my grandmother's philosophy, was not to change too much.
