Silver mining in Nevada began in the 1800s, creating boomtowns (towns that grow very quickly because of a sudden economic opportunity) and earning Nevada the nickname “the Silver State.” Today, silver is still mined in Nevada, but mostly as a byproduct of gold mining, with gold and other minerals now playing a bigger role in the state’s economy. ⛏️💸
