People often say "a sharp tongue with a soft heart", yet true virtue has always been the unity of body, speech and mind. What a person's heart is like, so will their words be. Speech is never a trivial matter; it is the most direct expression of our inner selves. When we hurt others with our words, we are actually sowing the seeds of evil in our own hearts. Those words full of resentment and bitterness will eventually come back to us in another way. In fact, speaking well is a very important practice. A warm word or a kind smile can unintentionally illuminate someone else's world and warm our own hearts as well. When we can control our mouths and speak with a soft heart, we possess the most precious treasure in the world. As Rinpoche said: "Neither disturb others' minds nor waver in your own resolve." This is also the highest state of verbal virtue.——Respected Teacher Jia Cuo
