In 2026, the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, a milestone that invites reflection on the nation’s journey and the ideas that have shaped its identity. To celebrate this historic anniversary, the Shanghai American Center presents the “American Foundations Series: Texts That Shaped a Nation,” a workshop series exploring the documents that have profoundly influenced America’s vision, ambition, and innovative spirit. Through these workshops, we will examine the context in which these foundational texts were written and consider how their meanings have evolved over time.

The fourth session, “A More Perfect Union – The Seneca Chiefs and George Washington’s Farewell Address,” will be led by historian Christopher Moses. As the first president of the newly formed United States, George Washington helped shape the nation’s political traditions while navigating conflicts at home and abroad. This session will explore Washington’s exchange with Seneca leaders Cornplanter, Half Town, and Great Tree, alongside his famous Farewell Address, examining questions of leadership, national unity, diplomacy, and justice in the early republic. Join us for an engaging discussion of the hopes, challenges, and competing visions that shaped the United States in its earliest years.

The event will be conducted in English.

About the Speaker:

Christopher Moses is a graduate student on leave from the History Department at Princeton University, where he earned distinction in three examination fields: colonial and revolutionary America, 18th-century Britain, and early modern European intellectual history. He holds an undergraduate degree in history from Reed College, where he served as Student Body President.

His research interests include European discovery and imperialism, economic thought, and the origins and creation of the United States through the Civil War. Chris has served as Head of School—International, taught as a lecturer at Princeton, and convened a Principals Forum on Higher Education.
