Burning three incense sticks symbolizes reverence for the harmony of heaven, earth, and humanity in traditional Chinese culture, and is the core ritual for expressing piety and making wishes.
烧三炷香，愿与中国传统文化中的“天、地、人”三才和谐的敬仰，是表达虔诚与祈愿的核心仪式。

三炷香的深层寓意：

In folk and religious cultures, the practice of offering three incense sticks is not arbitrary but carries profound symbolic meanings. This tradition is deeply rooted in ancient Chinese philosophical thought and religious doctrines. The characteristics (special features) of this phenomenon are mainly manifested in the following aspects: 在民俗与宗教文化中，三炷香并非随意而定，而是承载着丰富的象征意义，主要体现在以下几个方面：

1.Heaven, Earth, and Humanity as the Three Fundamental Elements, the Foundation of the Universe
天地人三才，宇宙的根基

The first incense stick is offered to Heaven, praying for favourable weather, and national prosperity and peace, expressing reverence for the power of nature.
第一炷香敬天：祈求风调雨顺、国泰民安，表达对自然力量的敬畏。

The second incense stick is offered to the Earth, expressing gratitude for its great nourishment of all things and praying for a bountiful harvest and a life of abundance.
第二炷香敬地：感恩大地滋养万物，五谷丰登，生活富足。

The third incense stick is offered to honor ancestors, pray for family prosperity, and symbolize the entrustment of personal wishes.
第三炷香敬人：缅环祖先、祈求家族兴旺，也代表自身心愿得寄托。

This concept is rooted in ancient agrarian society. People depend on heaven and earth to survive, and should honor their ancestors and value filial piety. These three are indispensable. Intentionally spreading three fragrances to reach the three realms (the doctrine of the three kingdoms). 这一理念根植于古代农耕社会，人们依赖天地生存，尊祖重孝，三者缺一不可，故意三香通达三界。

In Buddhism practice, three sticks of incense stand for the reverent offering to the three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.
在佛教信仰中，三炷香代表着“佛、法、僧”三宝的恭敬供养；

lost. 中间香供佛：皈（音规；“皈依”原指佛教的入教仪式，后泛指信仰佛教或参加其他宗教组织也作“归皈）依佛，觉而不迷；

The left incense stick is offered to the Sangha, taking refuge in the Sangha, pure and unstained. 左测香供僧，皈依僧，净而不染。
At the same time, this also symbolizes the three studies of precepts, mediation, and wisdom., and remind practitioners to diligently cultivate wholesome dharma and eradicate the three poisons of greed, hatred, and delusion. 同时，这也象征“戒、定、慧”三学，提醒修行者勤修善法，熄灭“贪、嗔（读琛）、痴”三毒。
1.The Three Pure Ones and the triad produce all existences
道教的“三清”，与“三生万物”

Taoism (or Daoism) holds that the Tao gives birth to One, One gives birth to Two, Two gives birth to Three, and Three gives birth to all things. Three is the origin of all things, and therefore, three sticks of incense represent reverence for the three supreme deities: Yuqing (Jade Pure One), Shangqing (Supreme Pure One), and Taiqing (Highest Pure One), the symbol of cosmic creation and the cycle of life. 道教认为“道生一，一生二，二生三，三生万物”，三位万物之始，故三炷香代表对“玉清、上清、太清”三位志高神明的崇敬，寓意宇宙生成与生命轮回。
Modern significance: Spiritual settlement and cultural inheritance
现代意义：心灵的安顿与文化的传承

Nowadays, burning incense is not only a religious practice, but also a form of psychological comfort. Especially in large cities with high pressure, many young people choose to go to temples for incense offerings instead of going to work, seeking inner peace and hope. This phenomenon is actually a cultural trend worth nothing.
如今，烧香不仅是宗教行为，更成为一种心理慰藉。尤其在压力较大的都市生活中，许多年轻人选择“在上班和上香只见选料上香”，则是寻求内心的平静与希望。这种现象实际上是一种不值得关注的文化趋势。

It reminds us to be grateful to nature, revere our ancestors, never forget our roots, cultivate our inner selves, and pursue wisdom.
