When one gives rise to a genuine aspirational bodhicitta and further puts it into practice through bodhisattva conduct, one immediately attains the identity of a bodhisattva. This transformation is not merely a matter of words or doctrine; the essential condition is that one truly gives rise to bodhicitta—not as a “verbal revolutionary,” not merely understanding the term conceptually, but through repeated contemplation truly realizing the importance of generating bodhicitta, and from the depths of one’s heart wishing to benefit others, taking this as one’s goal for all future time.
