Revealing the Core Contradictions of the Speed of Light Theory Using Modern Science’s Own Principles

The constancy of the speed of light in a vacuum has long been regarded as a fundamental law of modern physics, even defined as a universal constant, widely applied in various physical deductions and theoretical calculations. However, when strictly examined under modern science’s own definitions, experimental conclusions, and basic logic, this theory contains fundamental contradictions that cannot be justified. Without introducing any external hypotheses, these flaws can be clearly demonstrated using only scientifically accepted rules.

First, we state irrefutable established facts of modern science, each universally recognized in physics:

1. Velocity is a vector quantity containing both speed (magnitude) and direction. A change in either component necessarily changes the velocity. This is the basic definition of vector mechanics and common sense in all physical research.

2. The speed of light is directly related to the propagation medium. Physics clearly provides the refractive index formula: n = c/v, where c is the speed of light in vacuum, v is the speed of light in the medium, and n is the refractive index. Precise experiments show that the refractive index of Earth’s atmosphere is approximately 1.0002926, significantly greater than 1. Direct derivation from the formula confirms that the speed of light in Earth’s atmosphere is necessarily slower than in vacuum.

3. Modern physics explicitly acknowledges that gravitational fields act on photons with energy and momentum, altering their direction of motion—known as gravitational deflection and gravitational lensing, core concepts of general relativity.

Based on these three widely accepted scientific conclusions, the logical contradictions in the modern theory of the speed of light are fully exposed.

First Contradiction: Arbitrary violation of vector mechanics.
If a gravitational field can change the direction of light, a real interaction exists between gravity and light that modifies the velocity vector of light. By consistent physical logic, there is no scientific basis to claim that an interaction altering vector direction leaves its magnitude (speed) completely unchanged.

Modern physics asserts that gravity bends light while insisting the speed of light remains fixed—permitting directional change but forbidding speed change. This is an entirely artificial imposition, completely violating the unified rules of vector mechanics. In physics, all interactions affecting vectors should follow the same logic; a double standard applied exclusively to light contradicts scientific rigor and consistency.

Second Contradiction: Environmental dependence of light speed contradicts its definition as a “universal constant.”
Experiments conclusively show that light travels at different speeds in vacuum, air, water, glass, and other media. Light is slower in Earth’s atmosphere than in cosmic vacuum, proving that light speed is an environment‑dependent physical quantity varying with medium and field conditions.

Yet modern physics arbitrarily defines “vacuum light speed” as a universal constant applicable across the cosmos, extending a quantity valid only in vacuum to all environments including Earth’s atmosphere and galactic space, even using vacuum light speed to calculate phenomena in Earth’s environment. Despite experimental proof of variable light speeds across environments, a single value is enforced universally. This divorce of theoretical definition from experimental observation violates science’s core principle of grounding theory in experiment.

Third Contradiction: Deliberate neglect of light speed variation in Earth’s gravitational field.
Earth possesses a gravitational field, an objective physical environment. According to modern gravitational theory, gravity alters spacetime properties and thereby affects light propagation. If gravity changes light’s trajectory, it modifies light’s propagation conditions, so its speed should also be affected.

No rigorous physical derivation proves that gravitational fields alter only direction, not speed, of light. The “invariance of light speed” is logically inconsistent, maintained merely to preserve the existing theoretical framework. Directly applying vacuum light speed to Earth’s atmosphere‑filled, gravitationally structured environment constitutes scientifically unsound imposition, revealing internal contradictions within the theory.

The essence of science lies in logical consistency, respect for facts, and adherence to unified laws. The modern theory of light speed, however, presents irreconcilable conflicts among its own definitions, experimental evidence, and logical rules. On one hand, it acknowledges environment‑dependent light speeds and gravity‑altered photon motion; on the other, it dogmatically upholds the “constancy of light speed.” Such contradictory reasoning has long departed from the true nature of science.

Genuine science never evades logical conflicts, nor does it enforce double standards to defend established conclusions. Questioning the theory of light speed is not a rejection of science, but an insistence on scientific rigor, demanding physical theories achieve logical unity and alignment between fact and deduction. Only by confronting contradictions in existing theories can physics truly advance—this is what science ought to be.
