Pope Leo: Enough War

Pope Leo XIV strongly criticized what he called the "illusion of absolute power" fueling the US-Israeli war against Iran, in his strongest condemnation yet.

Leo presided over an evening prayer service at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on the same day that the United States and Iran began direct, face-to-face negotiations in Pakistan.

The Pope, the first US-born pope in history, did not mention the United States or President Donald Trump by name in his prayer, which was scheduled before the announcement of the talks.  But Leo's tone and messages seemed directed at Trump and the American officials who boasted of American military superiority and justified war with religious rhetoric.

In a direct appeal to world leaders, Pope Leo said, "Stop! It is a time for peace! Sit down at tables of dialogue and mediation, not at tables where rearmament is planned." He added, "Enough of the worship of self and money! Enough of the show of force! Enough of war!

He explained that leaders use religion to justify their actions in war, noting that American officials have invoked their Christian faith to portray the United States as a Christian nation striving to defeat its enemies. He emphasized that God does not bless any war, and certainly not one in which bombs are dropped

The 70-year-old pope added that the Church opposed the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, referring to an appeal made by the late Pope John Paul II four days before the war began. Leo, known for his careful choice of words, has emerged as an outspoken critic of the war with Iran.

His latest remarks come amid growing criticism of the United States and Israel for invoking religious rhetoric and symbolism in the context of the ongoing conflict with Iran. Just days ago, US Defense Secretary Pete Higgseth asked Americans to pray "in the name of Jesus Christ" for a military victory in the Middle East.
