Shang legend traces this veneration to a mythical egg – the "Mysterious Bird" – from which their ancestors were born, explaining why phoenix motifs frequently appear on Shang artifacts. Among the many jades found in the tomb of the Shang queen and general Fu Hao, one singular jade phoenix stands out for its elegance and craftsmanship. Archaeologists link its style to the Shijiahe culture of Hubei (4800–4400 years ago), revealing an unbroken artistic lineage.
