2016. This was without a doubt one of the craziest years of my life! As I was chugging along living in Nashville as an independent musician, I found out that an unassuming fairy tale folk song of mine had randomly gone viral on Chinese music platforms. Some of my albums had apparently been pirated without my knowledge and uploaded to sites I wasn’t familiar with, where they organically garnered tens of millions of streams. As I started learning more about this, with the help of some friends I scrapped together a tour to a part of the world I’d never been to. To my utter shock and surprise, people actually came to my shows and knew the words to my songs in multiple cities in China. It’s hard to put into words what this felt like…it was so surreal. Thus began a wonderful adventure and a special relationship with the Chinese people who seemed to embrace my music in a way no one else had at that point.
