Each winter, Shenzhen Bay Park enters its most active migratory season.
Along the waterfront, residents and visitors gather to watch, photograph, and discuss migratory birds, making birdwatching a shared seasonal activity in the city.
The black-headed gull is the most prominent winter species in Shenzhen Bay.
Migrating from Siberia and other northern regions along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, the gulls stay in the bay for around five to six months.
Other species, such as great knots, use the area as a stopover during long-distance migrations, while cormorants remain for shorter or longer periods.
The birds arrive in Shenzhen Bay to escape harsh winters or to refuel during migration.
The park and surrounding mangrove wetlands provide a mild climate, abundant food resources, and relatively safe resting areas, making the bay an important seasonal habitat.
Surrounded by skyscrapers, people and birds share the same coastal space.
