The morning of my 51st birthday, I did something out of the blue.
Halfway through writing the Heart Sutra, I took off my reading glasses and continued in half-blindness. I wanted to feel what it was like to write without seeing clearly — to rely on my body, my muscle memory, and the vague image before me.
As I moved past the initial fear of the blur, something shifted. I began to relax. I stopped worrying about getting it right and let my fingers lead the way. Stroke by stroke, I trusted the movement.
When I finished, I realized I had written the entire Heart Sutra after all. The characters were what they were meant to be.
In that moment, a profound realization arrived.
I don’t need to do everything perfectly. I don’t need to be correct or right all the time. When I act from my heart and trust my body — my hands, my breath, my intuition — every stroke counts, even the imperfect ones.
Isn’t that what life is about?
This feels like the best gift I could give myself — wisdom.
To live authentically, without apology.
So happy birthday to me! Thank you all for the birthday blessings!
