The brilliant and complex character of Robert Oppenheimer inspired two distinct and contradictory responses among those who knew him. There is a 【substantial majority】 which remembers him as a great man, someone who was gifted with a superb intellect, considerable personal charm, and great personal integrity-someone whom many of them professed to have 【loved deeply】. There is a minority, however, which, while admitting to his intellectual powers - no one disagrees over this -- remembers him as arrogant, calculating and selfish. These people remember him as an actor who, however 【skilfully, was always playing out a role. 】To them he was incapable of proper emotion and had betrayed not only friends but causes - maybe even his own country - for his own ends.
