“I didn’t want to be a writer.”
As a young man, László Krasznahorkai tried on all sorts of lives: he was a miner in the Pécs area, the director of a house of culture in a remote village and a night watchman at a dairy farm.
When he started to write Satantango, he thought he would never write a book again. For him the phase of the adolescent resistance – to becoming a part of the fabric of society as a writer, lasted a long time.
