The term "if" here refers to the Bodhisattva of the Arhats, which is broader. All sentient beings, as long as they can understand the Lotus Sutra, whether they are celestial beings, human beings or ghosts, "even a verse" - a verse consisting of four lines, "will undoubtedly become Buddhas". Did the Buddha say here that "if one practices for another ten thousand years, there is no doubt that one will become a Buddha"? Is there any? So there are numerous such prophecies in the Lotus Sutra! It emphasizes achieving enlightenment without cultivation or practice! When Madanga met the Buddha, she achieved the status of a three-fruit Arhat with just a few words. After listening to a few more verses from Manjusri Bodhisattva, I immediately attained the Four Fruits of enlightenment as an Arhat. Of course, we do not mean that we do not want to cultivate or verify. If one has both cultivation and certification, one's taste can be further enhanced.
声闻若菩萨，这个「若」更广泛。所有众生只要能听懂《法华经》，若天、若人、若鬼，「乃至于一偈」——一偈是四句话，「皆成佛无疑」。佛在这里有没有讲「再修一万年，皆成佛无疑」？有没有啊？所以《法华经》像此类的授记多得很呐！就是强调无修无行而证！摩登伽女见佛，几句话就证三果罗汉；又听文殊菩萨几句偈颂，当下证四果罗汉。当然我们并不是不要修、不要证；有修、有证的话，品位可以进一步提升。
