很多同学在社群里都问过我一个问题：

instead 到底如何理解？

这次给大家用最简单的方式讲一讲，一听你就懂了。

🍉 instead 最本质的意思是：

A、B 两者进行选择，强调「没有做A，而是做了B」，因此重点应该是在B上。

A和B两个动作「不同」，并不一定完全相反。

我们不用去单独记instead的中文意思，直接看英文释义：

If you do not do something, but do something else instead, you do the second thing and not the first thing, as the result of a choice or a change of behaviour.

我们来看几个例子：

▪️ Geoff didn’t study law. Instead, he decided to become an actor.

杰夫没学法律，而是决定当演员。

再比如封面图那句话：

▪️ Don't Look at this. Look out for thieves instead.

别看这里，而是小心小偷。

还有一个小细节，同学们留意一下：

🍉 instead 可以放在句首、句中、句末。

我们再多看几个例子：

▪️ I didn't go to the buffet. I went gambling instead.

我没有去吃自助餐，而是去赌博了。

▪️ While the Conservatives put the emphasis on the economy, Labour focused instead on public services.

保守党把重点放在经济上，工党却把重点放在了公共服务上。

▪️ The UN resisted any tougher sanctions, opting instead for more time to give talks a chance.

联合国拒绝任何更严厉的制裁，而是选择更多时间给谈判一个机会。
