Northern Irish star wants a role in the upcoming Beatles movies

‘The fifth Beatle we didn’t know about was actually from Armagh,’ he joked to JOE on the red carpet.

Northern Irish actor Colin Morgan has expressed an interest in appearing in director Sam Mendes’ upcoming movies about The Beatles.

JOE spoke to The Boy That Never Was and Merlin star on the red carpet in Dublin’s Light House Cinema last week. This was for the world premiere of his new Wicklow-shot drama film Long Day’s Journey Into Night, an adaptation of the classic Eugene O’Neill play in which he appears opposite Ed Harris and Jessica Lange.

Speaking about working with the two Hollywood giants, Morgan told press that the experience was “intimidating and scary, explaining: “I was the only non-American guy who had to meet these A-listers coming to our part of the world.

“It [was] an education for me. It’s a chance to be amongst people who really know their stuff and to work with some great writing and to work with just a gift of a role that I’ve always wanted to play.

“So for me, it was a lovely opportunity. I just had to rise to the occasion.”

Following this, JOE asked Morgan if there were any other actors on his bucket list in terms of people he would like to work with.

In response, he said: “Oh countless. I’m someone who’s always inspired by people. I mean, there are great actors who I’ve loved life-long.

“Sean Penn is kind of up there. He has always been a long-term favourite of mine.”

Morgan also told JOE there are several directors he would love to work with as well.

“I really want to work with people like Sam Mendes, Tim Burton, Paul Thomas Anderson. They’ve been long-term favourites, right from when I first saw like Magnolia, for example, which just inspires me to this day,” he told us.

“To work with people who really helped you elevate your game and you to arrive at a place where they could help you elevate it even more in person, that’s the dream.”

We then asked Morgan if he was campaigning to appear in Sam Mendes’ upcoming series of Beatles movies.

Morgan, sporting longer hair, responded: “I’m working on the hair, do you know what I mean? Get this in a nice shape. I could pull off one of them, right?

“I got a tune under my belt or two. Let’s see, now that I know Mendes is on the case. Will you put in a good word for me?”

He then joked: “The fifth Beatle we didn’t know about was actually from Armagh.”

Last year, it was announced that Mendes would be directing four films about The Beatles, with each one told from a different band member’s point of view.

Ringo Starr has also said that Irish actor Barry Keoghan will be playing the drummer in the movies.
