《周易》有言：关乎天文，以查时变；关乎人文，以化成天下。文化即民族对终极性的价值意义或曰人生根本价值意义的追求. 此亦自然包括对前贤的追念，即《论语》言：慎终追远，民德归厚矣。是以早前即深为乐见先生2011年访港时于繁忙中参观香港大学并在百年校庆中发表演讲，这体现了先生甚为尊师重教，尊崇学问，我深为敬重。今录其演讲中的英文部分于博文以记之，以示对先生充满的怀念、充满的崇敬和锲而不舍、一以贯之的学习！
“The university of Hongkong was to be for China and the world” ，and just now, he once again stressed that HKU is a university "built for china and the world." I echo Vice- Chancellor Tsui's view. Indeed, HKU is for Hongkong,attracting talents and educating people to promote Hongkong's prosperity. HKU is for China. It has become a key higher-education institution in China, playing an increasingly important role in China's development and its integration with the world. And HKU is also for the world, becoming an integral part of the world's academic community in advancing human knowledge. As the university of Hongkong is proudly celebrating its first one hundred years, I strongly believe that the next one hundred years of the university will be even better。
