Forward bends.
a) Effective pelvic control creates a fulcrum at the hips which brings the body forward while alignment is maintained. This should be the focus rather than trying to get to the feet, which should only occur at the very end of the pose – if one is proficient.
b) Without effective pelvic control the client tries to pull themselves forward: the spine collapses, the neck and shoulders are tense, and the “dome” increases.
c) Bringing the pelvis higher on a support assists the client to achieve better pelvic control. Placing a block under the knee can also help offload the hamstrings more, and placing a chair in front of the client can help slightly support them while they action all the 1st patterns – including the shoulder (not shown). It is more a case of how well the pose is controlled than how far someone can reach forward.
