世界大象日由加拿大動保人士Patricia Sims和泰國大象放歸基金會Elephant Reintroduction Foundation於2012年8月12日設立，
其目的在於呼籲人們關注身處迫切困境的非洲象和亞洲象，及呼籲人們重視象牙的盜獵問題。
目前世界大象日已得到世界動物保護協會World Animal Protection及全球多個動保組織的倡導和推動。

World Elephant Day is an international annual event on August 12,
it was officially founded, supported and launched by Patricia Sims and the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation on August 12, 2012.
Since that time, Patricia Sims continues to lead and direct World Elephant Day, which is now supported by many wildlife organizations and many individuals in countries across the globe.
