US Vice President: We Will Return to Washington Without an Agreement with the Iranians
US Vice President J.D. Vance announced the failure to reach an agreement in the negotiations between the United States and Iran in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, saying that this was worse for the Iranians than for the Americans.
In an urgent press briefing from Islamabad, Vance said that the two delegations negotiated for approximately 21 hours without reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. He noted that the Iranians refused to commit to not pursuing nuclear weapons, a key demand of President Donald Trump.
He explained that he had been in contact with Trump six times during the negotiations, as well as with the Secretary of Defense, the Commander of Central Command, and members of Congress. He praised the efforts made by the Pakistanis to bridge the gaps between the two sides.
Vance continued, "We came to negotiate in good faith, but we were unable to reach an agreement acceptable to both sides." He added, "The Iranian nuclear facilities were destroyed, but the Iranian side did not commit to halting its nuclear program."
He concluded by saying that the United States had offered the best possible terms to the Iranians in these negotiations.
De Vance's announcement represents a setback to the optimism that had emerged from news reports suggesting a possible second round of negotiations on Sunday, at Pakistan's request.
Trump had threatened to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz unless the Iranians agreed to reopen it immediately, while Iranian media reported that Washington was presenting conditions that Tehran considered "excessive," particularly regarding freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.
